Also, the 'preferred name' could be the 'trademark name' registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs or the 'trade name' regis- tered with the GST Council or any other such unique name duly registered with the Government, provided that the subscriber entity is able to present the necessary documents to prove the ownership of suchname. Trai said that it has also received consumer concerns in respect of robocalls, spam calls and fraudu- lent calls. Currently, smartphone users make use of native smartphone tools and third-party apps to identify the calling party name and mark spam calls. Apple, the manufacturer of iPhones, has a 'silence unknown callers' feature on its mobile handsets. The Google Phone app for Android has a 'caller ID and spam' protection feature that allows phone users to mark incoming calls as spam. T h i r d - p a r t y a p p s l i k e 'Truecaller' and 'Bharat Caller ID & Anti-spam' also provide calling party name identification and spam identification facilities. Generally, native smartphone tools and third-party apps provide name identification services based on crowd-sourced data. However, the crowd-sourced name identity information may not be reliable, in many instances. n a move to give respite I from spam and fraudulent calls, Trai has come out with its recommendations on “Introduction of Calling Name Pr e s en t a t i on (CNAP) Service in Indian Telecommunica- tion Network”. Trai has recom- mended that telcos mandatorily provide caller identification services to its subscribers. The name identity information pro- vided by the telephone subscriber in the Customer Application Form (CAF) should be used for the purpose of CNAP.
